Hemp & Root
Some drinks whisper. The Pathfinder announces itself with an all-seeing eye and a flourish. This is the cult non-alcoholic spirit from Portland, USA, fermented from hemp, refined in copper pot stills, and blended with a small riot of botanicals: wormwood, angelica, saffron, ginger, sage, juniper, orange peel, and wild Douglas fir. Bittersweet, bold, and gloriously strange, it is an amaro-style elixir dressed in the finery of a bygone apothecary, and good enough to be named among the best non-alcoholic drinks by The New York Times' Wirecutter.
Tasting Notes
Bitter and brilliant. Wormwood and bitter roots lead, cut through with bright orange and lemon peel, while Douglas fir brings a resinous, pine-forest lift and saffron a flicker of floral gold. Warming spice and ginger smoulder underneath, and the finish runs long, dry, and herbal. Complex, a little bizarre, and all the better for it: this is a spirit with opinions. True to its old-apothecary act, the label cheerfully bills it as "immediate relief for malaise and ennui, cold feet and hot tempers," which tells you everything you need to know.
How to serve
Pathfinder smells like a spirit, tastes like a spirit, and mixes like one too, so treat it with the respect it clearly expects. Pour it neat over a single large rock as a slow, amaro-style sipper, or press it into service in the classics: an alcohol-free Negroni, a Black Manhattan, or an espresso martini with real swagger. It lengthens handsomely into a spritz with tonic and a twist of citrus. It is even, improbably, rather good in coffee.
